Water use
- Consider installing meters to different parts of the enterprise to drill down into your water usage more effectively.
- Ensure that taps are not left running – in unattended areas consider fitting taps that switch off automatically after a set period or fit taps with motion sensors.
- Fit diffusers to taps.
- Review water use from the meter reading month on month for abnormalities and investigate them quickly.
- Check all water installations for minor leaks. Even a dripping tap can waste a significant quantity of water.
- Fit a water displacement device such as a cistern bag or a one litre plastic bottle into every cistern to reduce the amount of water used per flush.
- Fit regulated flushes to toilets.
- For urinals, fit water saving flushes which operate only after each visit and turn off when the building is unoccupied.
- If you have a shower or showers installed, fit low flow heads (except to safety showers).
- Harvest rainwater and use it for all non-hygiene-related applications, for watering indoor plants and for external landscaping.
- Recycle industrial process water where possible.
- If water use is significant, set up a water use and saving committee which should meet regularly to identify further water-saving measures.
