Paper, recycling and waste management

  1. Question whether you need to print a document or whether it can be sent or stored electronically.
  2. Purchase recycled paper for use in printers and copiers.
  3. Set printers and copiers to print double-sided.
  4. Collect all paper that has been used on one side only and re-use it for printing in draft or for message pads.
  5. Buy consumable materials (paper and stationery products, toilet paper and refuse sacks) with a high recycled content.
  6. Make sure telephone messages are passed on by e-mail rather than writing them out and using unnecessary paper.
  7. Speak to your waste management contractor about any special waste management problems you may encounter.
  8. Encourage recycling in the office by removing all individual waste bins and putting a series of recycling bins (paper, glass, plastic, organic waste) in the kitchen or other communal area.
  9. Undertake a waste audit to determine the volume of waste disposed of each month. Use this as a benchmark to reduce the volume and/or weight.
  10. Recycle paper, cardboard packaging and glass – discuss the options with your waste management company and, if they cannot recycle paper and other materials, seek a reduction in your contract rate to allow you to negotiate with another provider to take materials for recycling.
